The Epsom Salt Detox: Cleanse your body & mind

02 October 2023

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s essential to take time to cleanse our bodies and minds. So, as your go-to company for some rather nifty Epsom Salt crystals, we thought we’d highlight how to enjoy a great body and mind detox, plus a few other ideas…

As you may be aware, Epsom Salt has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for various health concerns, and it turns out that our ancestors were on the money when it came to looking after themselves. So, how best to start a detox in the modern era? The short answer being, ideally with a warm bath infused with Epsom Salt. You see, the salt crystals contains magnesium and sulphate, which are easily absorbed through the skin and the detox process aims to draw out toxins from your body, reduce stress and promote relaxation.

The prep work

Choose a quiet and peaceful time, when you won’t be interrupted. It’s important to find a moment when you can fully relax without any distractions to allow you to fully immerse yourself in the detox process and benefit from its amazing effects.

In terms of your supplies, apart from a bath tub, you’ll need your Epsom Salt crystals and, if you like, some essential oils such as lavender or eucalyptus, for added relaxation.

The process

Fill your bathtub with warm water; we say warm as really hot water can be dehydrating, so think warm and comforting rather than hot and uncomfortable.

Add your Epsom Salt crystals by pouring them into the running water (a couple of cups should do the trick), or you can run your bath, then pour in the crystals, using your hand to help dissolve them.

Then, if the mood takes you, add a few drops of your favourite essential oil to enhance the relaxation and rejuvenation experience – and perhaps a glass of cucumber-infused water as a drink for good measure.

Then sit back, relax and soak for at least 20 minutes. Take this time to clear your mind and focus on deep breathing. You can also opt to meditate or listen to calming music or a relaxing podcast and just be in the moment.

And now for the benefits…(and the scientific stuff)

Detoxification: Epsom Salt helps draw out toxins from the body through the process of reverse osmosis. This can aid in reducing inflammation, supporting digestion and improving overall detoxification.

Relaxation & stress relief: Soaking in an Epsom Salt bath promotes relaxation and reduces stress. The magnesium in the salt helps relax muscles, ease tension and improve sleep quality. It can also help alleviate headaches and promote a sense of well-being.

Skin health: As mentioned, Epsom Salt can be beneficial for various skin conditions, such as eczema, psoriasis and acne. It also helps exfoliate dead skin cells, cleanse pores and improve overall skin texture.

Improved nutrient absorption: The sulphate in Epsom Salt assists in the absorption of essential nutrients, which can support better nutrient uptake and improve overall bodily functions – a win-win!

Your post-detox plan

After completing an Epsom Salt detox, it’s important to drink plenty of water to replenish fluids and support the elimination of toxins. You should also allow yourself time to rest and rejuvenate after the detox. It’s the same as when you have a massage; a lot of the benefits are reaped after the treatment (when you’re relaxing), so don’t go straight into rushing around or engaging in strenuous activities.

To experience the full benefits of an Epsom Salt detox, it’s a good idea to aim to repeat the process at least once a week. Incorporating a detox into your wellness ritual can be a really effective way of cleansing your body and mind. Finally, remember to listen to your body and make self-care a priority for optimal well-being.

Top tip

As part of your detox (and while you’re enjoying your relaxing soak), why not try what renowned beauty influencer, Olivia Falcon  from The Editors List does to volumise her hair? Simply pour some Epsom Salts into the palm of your hand, then add your favourite shampoo and mix into a paste; it’s a great scalp treatment that helps with flyaway hair. Olivia says “Newton Wood’s Epsom Salts remove excess oils from the scalp, enhances hair texture, adds volume to the hair and manages dandruff!”

A few more ideas….

If you don’t have a bath, there are other ways to enjoy a detox using Epsom Salt crystals. Here are just a few to get you started:

Revitalising Foot Soak: After a long day of strutting your stuff, your feet deserve some love. Fill a foot bath or container with warm water, add your crystals and let those tootsies soak for about 20 minutes. It’ll help relieve any swelling or tension, leaving you ready to conquer the world in your favourite shoes.

  • DIY Exfoliating Scrub: Time to give your skin a little extra glow! Mix a handful of Epsom Salts with olive oil (about a tablespoon) to create a lovely scrub. Gently massage it into your skin in circular motions, then rinse off. Your skin will thank you with a fresh, radiant complexion.
  • Calming Magnesium Spray: Ah, magnesium – a true hero for relaxation. Dissolve half a cup of Epsom Salts in a cup of hot water, let it cool, then pour it into a spray bottle. Spritz it on after a shower for a soothing and calming effect on your skin.
