Sun burn saviour

06 August 2020

As the weather hots up for the Summer, sun burn makes an unwelcome appearance. It’s so important to protect our skin from sun damage but sometimes we’re caught off guard. There’s nothing worse than enjoying a lovely day out only to arrive home hot, itchy and sore from sun burn.

Next time you find yourself sun burned reach for Newton Wood Epsom salt.  With its anti-inflammatory properties, Epsom salt provides a welcome relief from the discomfort of sun burn.

How to use Epsom salt for sun burn:

  • Dissolve Newton Wood Epsom salt crystals into a cup of water
  • Add to a clean spray bottle
  • Spritz over the affected area

  • Run a cool to warm bath – your sun burned skin will be sensitive to hot water but it’s important not to have the water too cold either
  • Add a generous amount of Newton Wood Epsom salt crystals
  • Swirl to dissolve thoroughly
  • Soak for 30 minutes submerging the sun burn in the Epsom salt water

Once the sun burn has started to cool, usually within a few days, the skin will eventually start to peel and roll off.  The best thing to do now is to exfoliate to help remove the dead skin and condition the fresh skin underneath.

How to exfoliate peeling skin with Epsom salt:

  • Select a gentle body cleanser – a baby or calendula based shower gel
  • Pour a generous amount of cleanser into a small dish or cup
  • Add an equal amount of Newton Wood Epsom salt, stirring to partially dissolve
  • Apply the solution to your peeling skin, rubbing in circular motions
  • For an even more effective exfoliation use a muslin cloth to apply the solution in circular motions
  • Rinse thoroughly
  • Dry using gentle circular brushing movements
  • Moisturise thoroughly
  • Repeat the process daily or with each shower until the dead skin is removed
