Summer Skin Prep and Protect

Well-Being

03 June 2021

Summer skin prep is key to ensuring your skin remains healthy, glowing and moisturised during the hot weather.  We’ve explored a variety of tips and techniques for you to develop a full-bodied skincare regime to prepare and protect your skin this summer.

Protect skin from sun damage

This is probably the most important step for your Summer Skin Prep – keeping your skin protected from the harmful UV rays of the sun. Whether you’re staying in the UK or venturing abroad it’s vital to protect your skin with at least SPF 30 or above.  The SPF number tells you how long it takes for your skin to be affected by the sun compared to if you were not wearing any protection e.g. SPF 50 would take 50 times longer to redden your skin than if you weren’t wearing any at all.  Apply your SPF 30 minutes before sun exposure and ensure regular reapplication to keep your skin topped up with protection, especially after swimming or long exposure to direct sun.

It’s also important to check you’re fully covered from harmful UV rays. UVB rays cause sunburn and play a major role in the development of skin cancer. UVA rays also cause sunburn, as well as skin damage, which makes your skin tanned but increases the signs of aging and wrinkles. So, when shopping for your SPF UV protection be sure to look for one which has UVA and UVB protection (this can sometimes be labelled as “broad spectrum”).  Alternatively, there’s a wide variety of UVA and UVB protective clothing available now, find out more by clicking here.

Exfoliate and Condition

In order for your skin to look its best, it needs to shed old, damaged skin cells first.  A good exfoliation will help your skin release dry, dead skin, revealing fresh smooth skin so you look and feel your best. Whether you prefer a coarse scrub or a smooth acidic skin peel when you’ve renewed the outer layers of your skin it’s vital to keep it nourished, conditioned and protected.  You can do this by:

  • Using Epsom Salt in your shower gel or bath water – the magnesium will help keep your skin healthy, hydrated and nourished.
  • Hydrating your skin with a nourishing moisturiser or body oil – body oils are great for moisturising as they reach the deeper layers of the skin whereas a cream will hydrate the surface layers of the skin.
  • Protecting your skin with SPF and UVA/UVB protection.
  • Exfoliating regularly to keep on top of dry dead skin cells.

Nutrition and Hydration

We all know the importance of eating a nutritious, well-balanced diet.  But as summer approaches we are more likely to dine al fresco, over indulge at BBQs and garden parties and drink higher quantities of alcohol in the sun.  So, to ensure you stay healthy and hydrated be sure to eat a colourful, nutrient rich diet as often as possible and drink at least 2 litres of water every day (iced herbal teas are a wonderful way to do this). By keeping your body nourished and hydrated your skin will reap the benefits with a healthy glow.

Supportive Supplements

While being out in the sun can positively boost vitamin D levels (something many of us are lacking in) it can also have a detrimental effect on our skin.  Dry and sun damaged skin is not uncommon over the summer. And while we can use SPF and UVA/UVB protection to help, we can also take supplements to boost our skin health from the sun:

  • Biotin – also known as vitamin B7 supports the skin, hair and nails to stay healthy and strong.
  • Hyaluronic acid – known for attracting and trapping moisture in the skin cells is great for revealing healthy, supple, glowing skin while preventing dryness.
  • Anti-oxidants – protect your skin cells from oxidative stress and damage from free radicals (much like the skin of an apple protects the inner flesh from turning brown and decayed through oxidation). Antioxidants are available in a number of fruits, vegetables and herbs but can also be taken in supplement form for an added boost.

I LOVE these crystals! I'm not a bath-taker, so I was excited to discover that I could use it in the shower. I was also particularly excited to try it in my shampoo and let me tell you — the results were amazing! I've never found washing my hair to be a particularly fun experience, but these crystals, dare I say it, actually made washing my hair fun. My hair also looks amazing! It's softer and my curls are bouncier. I will definitely be using this every time I wash my hair! Tip: You just need one scoop in your shampoo. I recommend mixing it in a bowl beforehand.
