This is probably the most important step for your Summer Skin Prep – keeping your skin protected from the harmful UV rays of the sun. Whether you’re staying in the UK or venturing abroad it’s vital to protect your skin with at least SPF 30 or above. The SPF number tells you how long it takes for your skin to be affected by the sun compared to if you were not wearing any protection e.g. SPF 50 would take 50 times longer to redden your skin than if you weren’t wearing any at all. Apply your SPF 30 minutes before sun exposure and ensure regular reapplication to keep your skin topped up with protection, especially after swimming or long exposure to direct sun.
It’s also important to check you’re fully covered from harmful UV rays. UVB rays cause sunburn and play a major role in the development of skin cancer. UVA rays also cause sunburn, as well as skin damage, which makes your skin tanned but increases the signs of aging and wrinkles. So, when shopping for your SPF UV protection be sure to look for one which has UVA and UVB protection (this can sometimes be labelled as “broad spectrum”). In order for your skin to look its best, it needs to shed old, damaged skin cells first. A good exfoliation will help your skin release dry, dead skin, revealing fresh smooth skin so you look and feel your best. Whether you prefer a coarse scrub or a smooth acidic skin peel when you’ve renewed the outer layers of your skin it’s vital to keep it nourished, conditioned and protected. You can do this by:
We all know the importance of eating a nutritious, well-balanced diet. But as summer approaches we are more likely to dine al fresco, over indulge at BBQs and garden parties and drink higher quantities of alcohol in the sun. So, to ensure you stay healthy and hydrated be sure to eat a colourful, nutrient rich diet as often as possible and drink at least 2 litres of water every day (iced herbal teas are a wonderful way to do this). By keeping your body nourished and hydrated your skin will reap the benefits with a healthy glow.
While being out in the sun can positively boost vitamin D levels (something many of us are lacking in) it can also have a detrimental effect on our skin. I LOVE these crystals! I'm not a bath-taker, so I was excited to discover that I could use it in the shower.
