Mint is a well-known herb with a distinctive fragrance which matches our Epsom salts beautifully. Peppermint is probably the most popular type of mint being sold as a tea, an essential oil and mouthwash among other things. There’s also spearmint, watermint and garden mint too, each with a slightly different fragrance. We’re going to explore the healing properties of peppermint essential oil and how we can use it for an Epsom salt bath soak or body scrub.
Digestion with Peppermint and Epsom salt
Peppermint essential oil is a refreshing and invigorating oil, often associated with the digestive system. People who suffer from IBS have found it to be helpful in relieving the associated symptoms such as bloating, sluggish digestion, wind and cramping. Epsom salt in the bath is also thought to improve digestion, especially when experiencing constipation and inflammation of the digestion system. Peppermint essential oil and Epsom salt therefore makes a wonderful soothing bath soak for people struggling with their digestion.
Migraine and headache relief with Peppermint and Epsom salt
If you experience tension headaches and migraines but don’t like to take medical pain relief, inhaling peppermint oil can ease the pain and discomfort. Magnesium is also known to ease headaches and migraines. Soaking in an Epsom salt bath (which is 100% Magnesium Sulphate) coupled with the soothing mint fragrance could be the effective natural remedy you’ve been looking for.
Aching feet soothed with Peppermint and Epsom salt
Peppermint has a wonderfully cooling feel and can be particularly soothing for aching feet. After a long day peppermint added to an Epsom salt foot soak can be the ultimate relaxation and recovery technique. The Epsom salt helps relieve aches and pains from tired feet after a long day and the mint soothes, cools and rejuvenates while also acting as an antiseptic to help reduce foot odours and bacteria.
Wake up and concentrate with Peppermint and Epsom salt
A fantastic way to start the day is with a mint and Epsom salt body scrub. The salt provides a boost to your circulation by rubbing the skin in circular motions, removing dead skin cells and boosting blood flow. The peppermint can help wake up your senses, boosting your awareness and ultimately concentration for an effective day ahead. Your skin will feel beautifully soft and your mind will be alert and ready to go.
When using essential oils it’s important to always dilute them with a base first. A base can be a plain shower gel, bath oil, body cream or ointment. Generally a base of 25ml can have 5-10 drops of essential oil added to it, stirring well before using.

50g Coconut oil
25g Epsom salt
10 drops of Peppermint oil

These Epsom salts are the best I have used so far. I live with a long-term health condition Fibromyalgia and prefer natural drug free ways to relieve pain and exhaustion whenever I can.
