Are you having trouble getting a good night’s sleep? Do you find yourself tossing and turning, unable to relax and fall asleep? You’re not alone. According to Mental Health UK, adults up to the age of 64 need between seven and nine hours of sleep per night, yet in reality, almost one in five of us aren’t getting enough. But there’s a simple and natural solution that you may not have tried yet – Epsom Salt.

Also known as magnesium sulphate, Epsom Salt is a compound made up of magnesium, sulphur and oxygen. It has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for a variety of health issues, including muscle aches and pains, stress, anxiety and insomnia. In this month’s post, we’ll explore how you can use Epsom Salt to improve your sleep and wake up feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Why Epsom Salt is good for sleep

Epsom Salt is a natural source of magnesium, which is an essential mineral that our bodies need to function properly. Magnesium is known to help promote relaxation and reduce stress, which are both important factors in getting a good night’s sleep. It also plays a role in the production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates our sleep-wake cycles and helps us fall asleep at night.

In addition to magnesium, Epsom Salt also contains sulphur, which has detoxifying properties that can help to relax the muscles and relieve tension in the body. This can be especially helpful for people who suffer from muscle aches, cramps or stiffness, which can make it difficult to get comfortable and fall asleep.

How to use Epsom Salt for sleep

  1. Take a bath: Taking a bath is one of the most popular and effective ways to use Epsom Salt for sleep. Just fill your tub with warm water and add 1-2 cups of Epsom Salt. Stir the water to dissolve the salt, and then soak in the bath for 20-30 minutes before bedtime. The warm water will help to relax your muscles, while the Epsom Salt will provide your body with the magnesium it needs to promote relaxation and reduce stress.
  2. Opt for a foot soak: If you don’t have a bath or don’t want to take a full bath, you can still benefit with a foot soak. Fill a bowl with warm water and add a cup of Epsom Salt. Soak your feet for 15-20 minutes before bedtime to help soothe your feet and relax your entire body.
  3. Make a spray! Another great idea is to make a spray. Mix a cup of warm water with 1/4 cup of Epsom salt in a spray bottle. Shake well to dissolve the salt, and then spray the mixture on your skin before bedtime. You can also add a few drops of our Relax Organic Bath & Body Oil to the spray for added relaxation.
  4. Pillow mist: If you prefer to use a pillow mist, you can make one with Epsom salt and lavender essential oil. Mix a cup of distilled water with 1/4 cup of Epsom Salt and a few drops of lavender essential oil in a spray bottle. Shake well to combine, and then spritz your pillow and bedding before bedtime. Alternatively, for a quick fix, try our Calming Pillow Mist which offers a blend of essential oils expertly blended to help you drift naturally into a peaceful slumber.
