Aromatherapy Focus: Bergamot, Citrus Bergamia
As we begin this new year it’s easy to feel overwhelmed at starting all over again. Many of us are in much need of a refresh in health and wellbeing after the festivities. And with the dark cold nights and mornings, dreary weather and not much to look forward to, we can all feel low in our mental health.
This is why at Newton Wood® we are firm advocates for the use of aromatherapy oils. Not only do these wonderful oils bear emotive and powerful fragrances they also have a stark impact on our mood, health and wellbeing. Throughout the year we’re going to be exploring aromatherapy oils in more detail and how we can use these to enhance the healing benefits of Epsom salts.
To get us started our aromatherapy oil focus for January is Bergamot.
What is Bergamot?
This aromatic citrus fruit is described in flavour and fragrance as a cross between orange and lemon. Popularly grown in Italy, this fruit is recognisable in many Earl Grey tea blends.
Adored by many, Bergamot is most effective at boosting moods and lifting spirits. Bringing some much-needed emotional relief from the dull January atmosphere. Perfect to include in a revitalising Newton Wood® Epsom salt body scrub.
If you’re suffering from stress, anxiety, depression or seasonal affective disorder (SAD) this oil is an invaluable remedy to ease these symptoms naturally. Try soaking in a Newton Wood® Epsom salt bath, with the addition of some bergamot infused bath oil, and watch your worries, stresses and strains just drain away.
As well as mood boosting Bergamot has also been used historically in medicine right up to the modern day for ailments such as:
- Digestion and flatulence
- Skin conditions including eczema, acne,
- Cold sores
- Muscle aches and pains
And much more…
You’ll notice many of these ailments are also remedied by Epsom salt soaks, which is why we’re so passionate about adding this fantastic aromatherapy oil to our Epsom salt crystals.
How can I use Bergamot Aromatherapy Oil?
Aromatherapy oils can be used in a number of ways including in bath oils, body washes, body creams, candles, room fragrances, cleaning materials and perfumes.
You can buy pre-blended products which have already had bergamot added to them. Or you can create your own using plain non-fragranced base products (such as a bath oil made from sunflower, wheatgerm, almond and/or jojoba oil). Be sure to check the dilutions of the aromatherapy oil to base product, as aromatherapy oils can cause skin irritations if not used correctly and in the correct quantities.
Why should I infuse my Newton Wood® Epsom salts with Bergamot?
We love infusing our Newton Wood® Epsom salts with Bergamot aromatherapy oil because the oil beautifully complements the healing benefits of the salts.
Our salts can be used as a bath, hand or foot soak or as a body, face and hair scrub or cleanser. By infusing the salts with Bergamot you’ll notice a wonderful fragrance fills the room and perfumes your skin, which has the added benefit of enhancing your mood and outlook and further improving the quality of your sleep.
Please note: If you suffer from sensitive skin, eczema, psoriasis or any other skin or medical concern please check with a qualified aromatherapist or your healthcare professional to see if this is safe and appropriate for you to use. If you’re pregnant, breast feeding or on medication please check with your healthcare professional before using.
