A Winning Formula
On Thursday 12 September, the card at Epsom races featured the inaugural Newton Wood Handicap Stakes, marking our brand’s debut as headline sponsor of a major sporting event.
Bursting out of the gates at 4.30pm, eight runners battled it out over a mile of good-to-firm going on the fabled turf of Epsom Downs. The winner was the 15/8 favourite Bring Us Paradise, a three-year-old trained by Tony Carroll and ridden by apprentice Cieren Fallon, whose father Kieren was British Champion Jockey six times and a three-time winner of Epsom’s most famous race, the Derby.
We enjoyed the whole spectacle in the delightful company of guests including our founder and CEO, Leslie Wilson, and Stuart Warren, whose specialist brand agency, Warren Creative, has developed all our brand assets from our packaging and website to the posters and banners on display at Epsom.
The Newton Wood Handicap Stakes provided a fantastic opportunity to bring fundamental messages about the Newton Wood brand to a wider audience. Epsom is, of course, where the unique restorative properties of magnesium sulphate were first identified four centuries ago. The racecourse itself was created to provide entertainment for the wealthy patrons who came to Epsom from all over Europe to ‘take the waters’. So while we’ve positioned Newton Wood as a modern luxury British brand, we believe it’s also important to place it in its proper historical context, as a product with a substantial heritage and deep English roots.
The whole event was a huge success, and marks what we hope will be the start of a long association with the place where our brand’s story ultimately began.
The health benefits of Epsom salt, which occurs naturally in the soil of Epsom Common, were first discovered in 1618. Epsom rapidly become a thriving spa town with an international clientele: the racecourse was created in the 1660s to entertain wealthy patrons who came to ‘take the waters’.
Newton Wood® is the world’s first super-premium beauty and wellness brand to be built on the unique therapeutic benefits of Epsom salt, the common name for the chemical compound magnesium sulphate (MgSO4). Launched in 2018, Newton Wood® is bringing this proven traditional remedy to a global audience, in response to growing consumer concerns around additives, artificial chemicals, toxins and non-sustainable materials in conventional beauty products.
Leslie Wilson, founder and CEO of Newton Wood, says:
“Epsom Racecourse ultimately exists because of the health benefits provided by Epsom salt. Like our brand, it’s quintessentially British with a global reach and reputation, so this is a fantastic opportunity to draw on our shared story. Over the last four centuries, Epsom salt has been shown to have many health benefits. Our current range is designed for everyday soaking and therapeutic bathing, skin and hair care, sports recovery, saunas and steam-rooms and spa treatments.”
